In 2014, Scion AV featured plenty of great interview footage with the always-expanding roster of musicians, visual artists and athletes that Scion partners with. Some of them were legends with over three decades of experience and some are just getting going as they make a name for themselves. Below are the five best interviews from Scion AV in 2014.
1. Tom Araya of Slayer
Tom Araya of Slayer spoke with host Prince Paul on the Scion AV All Purpose Show. Though Slayer has made a name for themselves since the 1980s with a brutal and incredible sound that changed heavy music forever, the group’s bassist and vocalist is humble when discussing their impact.
It’s been a great year for Slayer and Scion. As participants in the Scion Collaboration project, Araya and his bandmate Kerry King were part of the Scion x Slayer Driven series that followed the band from the studio where they’re working on their new album to other spots around Los Angeles, including Araya’s visit to ESP Guitars to pick up a custom bass.
Scion also sponsored the band’s national tour with Exodus and Suicidal Tendencies, giving away tickets via Twitter for every stop. Then on November 6 at SEMA in Las Vegas was the premiere of Scion x Slayer Mobile Amp tC, which Kerry plugged directly into before unleashing some searing riffs.
2. Riley Hawk & Shep Dawgs
Pro skater Riley Hawk brought his Shep Dawgs crew along with him to the set of the Scion AV All Purpose Show to talk with Prince Paul. Hawk, along Taylor Kirby and Jacob Nuñez, got into his success as a street skater, as opposed to his father Tony’s storied history in vert skating. The trio also explain their inter-crew dynamics.
Riley Hawk was another participant in the Scion Collaboration project. Along with sponsoring a Shep Dawg skate trip that made a stops in places including the Exit the Real World Skate Shop in Portland, Oregon, there was also the Scion x Riley Hawk Skate Tour xB made for SEMA, which cultivated a sick ’70s vibe with shag carpeting, an 8-track player and much more. Be prepared for much from Scion AV and Riley Hawk in 2015.
3. Olivia Jean (Third Man Records)
Olivia Jean had a great 2014 and capped it off with an exhibit and performance at the Scion AV Installation space in Los Angeles. Sharing its name with Jean’s debut album, “Bathtub Love Killings” featured exclusive merch and records from Jean and other Third Man Records artists. In the above video she gave a tour of the show and explained some of her background to Scion AV All Purpose Show correspondent Stevie Lee.
A Scion Collaboration participant, before the release of Bathtub Love Killings, Jean previewed the album with the single Scion AV Presents: Olivia Jean—Reminisce and created a music video for the A-Side.
4. Steve Aoki
Superstar DJ and producer Steve Aoki did a ton with Scion AV in 2014. Kicking things off was his “Mementos” show at Scion AV Installation, which featured some of the insane fan art he’s accumulated over the years. He showed it to Scion AV All Purpose Show correspondent Slick Rick Rivera.
Aoki was also part of the Scion Collaboration project and the Scion x Aoki Driven series that featured him touring spots around Los Angeles, including a trampoline park and a skate spot where he met up with Riley Hawk.
5. Kirk Hammett of Metallica
Metallica guitarist and metal icon Kirk Hammett came to the Scion AV All Purpose Show to speak with host Prince Paul. It went down when Hammett’s Fear FestEvil arrived in San Diego earlier this year. Hammett recalls how he got into playing guitar, his love of monster movies and his KVH toy line.
Scion AV also sponsored the Fear FestEvil after-party which featured an incredible set by Exodus that included guest appearances by folks including Hammett, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, Richard Christy of The Howard Stern Show (and former drummer for Death), vocalist Mark Osegueda of Death Angel and Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction on drums.
